Why’s it in the Bag: JJ Spaun US Open 2025

Well that looked like a slog. JJ Spaun overcame rain delays and a waterlogged course with an incredible run on the back 9 on Sunday to clinch this year’s US Open. Oakmont lived up to its reputation as one of the harder courses to host golf’s hardest test, so what were the tools that he used to get his hands on his first major trophy?:

With all of the discourse around LAB and zero-torque putters it was inevitable that at some stage one would sneak into the major winner’s circle, and with the 64-foot winning putt it was quite a splash (if you’ll pardon the pun regarding the state of the course!). It didn’t come out of nowhere either, he holed 136 feet worth of putts in the final 7 holes alone. An interesting wrinkle is that he doesn’t play with the standard LAB grip which pre-sets the club in a shaft lean position, instead opting for a Scotty Cameron pistol grip.

Spaun is currently the 7th best ranked player on the PGA Tour for strokes gained for Approach Play, sharing a top 10 with players like Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele.
